What causes Rett syndrome?

In around 99% of cases Rett syndrome is caused by a change in the DNA (referred to as a mutation) of the gene named MECP2 which is found on the X chromosome. This gene contains the instructions for the body to make a protein that is vital for brain development. The gene mutation prevents nerve cells in the brain from functioning normally.
