Jules Whicher, winner of the Communication Champion of the Year Award and the overall winner of the Pearson Outstanding Achievement Award at the 2019 Shine a Light Awards, has been a Rett UK Regional Communication Champion since 2023. Her role benefits from 13 years of hands-on AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) experience, inspired by her 16-year-old son Charlie, clinically diagnosed with Angelman syndrome and a user of AAC.
Jules has shared her expertise at numerous specialist literacy and communication conferences and courses, including Communication Matters, De Montfort University, and Angelman UK. Over the years, she has hosted various specialist AAC courses and organised a notable conference for both families and professionals on AAC through her association with AFASIC. This conference integrated keynote speakers, local providers, and AAC suppliers.
Jules's contributions have extended to helping other families begin their AAC journeys. She has created bespoke communication books (PODD) for children and adults and organised inclusive outings focusing on communication and fun for individuals with complex communication needs and their families across Nottinghamshire.
Reflecting on the essence of communication, Jules says: “Being Charlie’s mum has shown me what is possible when a person has the opportunity, support, and resources to reach their full potential. Young people achieve incredible things when they have cheerleaders. When you demonstrate belief in someone, assume their potential, and convey that they can achieve anything, they rise to the occasion.”
